Several characters tend to have a specific themes, but the music reflects the atmosphere of what is going on and does it very well. I would say the last part would be the music. It's almost impossible to mix characters up. If you see a white button quail it will always be Nanaki, etc.
If you see a grey rock dove it's always Ryouta and it will always be in the same pose. Typically it's a single photo of the character used to represent them and the dialogue is all through text. The visuals are fairly straight forward - watercolor backgrounds with photographs or the occasional drawing (when a photo isn't fitting) of the characters. Even so, this game can be played and enjoyed by males, so long as they're comfortable controlling and listening to the thoughts of a female protagonist. You play as the sole human female attending a school for gifted birds, so most of the characters you interact with will be students or faculty at the school, and are mostly male birds of one sort or another. The other characters, all being birds, have unique personalities and are all very remarkable for one reason or another. This includes the protagonist, who you play but never actually see. The characters are very well done, and by that I mean their personalities are memorable. The storytelling is very well done, and everything in the shorter story routes ties together in this longer secondary route. That secondary story is what makes this so great. No F2P, no hidden payments, 100% free.Story wise, the game consists of multiple routes - some dark, some silly, some tug on the heart a bit, but there's a secondary story that unlocks after achieving specific endings.

It's coming to Steam soon, so be on the lookout. It's a fairly huge story, but it's episodic (for good reason). After learning that this happens every year, it starts to feel as if the entire town is against you, and the only thing keeping you alive is your paranoia and fear of being killed by whatever force took the lives of the two visitors. until two visitors wind up dead as can be after the local festival. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (or Higurashi: When They Cry, or whatever the official English title is now) is a fairly standard story set in the 1980's about a group of school-age kids living in a backwoods Japanese town, and their jolly escapades. Have fun finding a legit copy at a decent price, though. Like Hatoful's BBL route, the final route is the main draw, and boy, is it ever the crazy ride. You can play from two different perspectives, and the whole time you can tell something is seriously wrong when characters act strange or outright don't exist in other routes. It's a sci-fi VN about a group of kids getting stuck in a sinking underwater theme park. Probably the most similar to Hatoful with regards to gameplay and story flow on this list. Great characters, over-the-top battles of wits between lawyers, and amazing music are reasons you'd want to play them. More of an Adventure game than a pure Visual Novel (VN), but the writing is definitely the main draw.
